Feel like helping out our little fast flapping winged-friends? Well, you can learn how to make hummingbird food. These whizzing, high-metabolic birds need all the help they can get to keep that metabolism going. Remember, the flap their wings over 50 times per second. That’s a lot of energy.
These are special birds yet it’s simple to learn how to make hummingbird food. Let’s get into how to do this.
White Sugar in Purified Water
One way is to keep things very simple. You can just make up a 20 percent sugar solution (use plain white sugar) in water (about 1 part sugar to 4 parts water). Use purified or filtered water (don’t use distilled water) and boil the sugar in the water until completely dissolved. Add the sugar into the water as it comes to a boil. (Don’t add sugar directly into boiling water or you’ll just get a syrup). After the sugar is dissolved, boil the solution for another 2 minutes.
Let the solution cool down thoroughly and then just pour it into your hummingbird feeder (make sure your feeder is clean!). You don’t need to add other things like food colorings. Just keep it pure and simple for our hummingbird friends.
Note:
One note is to clean out your humming bird feeder every 3-4 days and refill it with a new sugar solution, since bacteria will accumulate in the sugar solution. If the sugar solution gets cloudy, that means it is spoiling and you should change it. We want our hummingbirds not to get sick. We want them to come back!
You can also keep any unused sugar solution in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Just use plain white sugar. Don’t use honey, as honey may cause infection to a hummingbird’s tongue.
Summary:
Bring to boil 1 part white sugar in 4 parts purified or filtered water, and add sugar until completely dissolved. Let cool and pour into clean hummingbird feeder. Don’t add any colorings. Change the feeder every 2-4 days and don’t let the solution get cloudy.
