Note that you cannot use your social security like a bank account and buy things with it. There have been schemes promoted online that falsely tell you this. These are basically hoaxes. For example, you cannot use your number to buy things on Amazon.
A social security number can be used to open a bank account, obviously. Things that require a type of strong identification such as getting a driver’s license, filing taxes, opening a credit account, applying for loans, etc. will likely as for your social security number.
Please protect your social security number. Criminal can used the number to falsely open bank accounts, file fraudulent tax refunds and commit other crimes. Identity theft is a problem when other steal your number.
